A LOVE STORY
Ouker de Jong, my Opa, was an extraordinary man whose unique quirks and endearing habits left an indelible mark on my family's memories. Renowned for his love of overcooked food, his fondness for slurping rollmops (pickled herring - a not-so-delicate Dutch delicacy), and his casual addition of poached eggs into anything he was eating, he had a one-of-a-kind style that isn't at all reflected in the menu of the restaurant I have named after him. Beyond his unconventional food preferences, Opa's charisma and kindness are forever etched in my mind, serving as a testament to the legacy of a man who lived life to the fullest.
Nora de Jong, my gorgeous and proud Oma from Indonesia, is the heart and soul behind the flavours on our menu. As a child, my siblings and I were endlessly excited as we pulled into the driveway, eagerly anticipating the lemper (a savoury snack made of glutinous rice filled with seasoned beef) that Oma would have always prepared for us. Her delicious creations continue to serve as cherished reminders for me to embrace new flavours and appreciate the beauty of food. Her legacy lives on in my love for diverse cuisines and my passion for exploring and understanding traditions.
Together, Opa and Oma were a dynamic duo, complementing each other in the most beautiful ways. As they entered their golden years, their unique combination of humorous idiosyncrasies and exchanges became one of the best and funniest things about life. Their bond served as a testament to the power of love that transcends cultural boundaries and brings people together. This restaurant is a tribute to both of them, named 'For Ouker' in Dutch, after my Opa, and serving flavours derived from and inspired by Indonesia in memory of my Oma. It is a culinary homage to their legacies, a celebration of their cultural heritage, and a testament to their profound influence on my life.
